The Major Matt Mason Collective in association with Sage Theatre presents
The Wildfire National Playwriting Competition
What is it?
We want to read awesome plays by young Canadian playwrights and we are willing to offer cash money!
We are looking for playwrights 30 years of age or under to submit fresh, young scripts that embrace risk, grit and evocation.
The winning script(s) selected by our jury will receive a cash prize and a one week development workshop culminating in a performance as part of the IGNITE! Festival in Calgary, Alberta as well as full or partial reimbursement for travel.
What kind of workshop?
We want this workshop to be led by you
The playwright has full control over what they want in the workshop and performance
Want solid dramaturgical help to solve that one nagging question (you know, the one that keeps you up at night?)
We can do that!
Want to get it on its feet and explore movement or design elements?
We can do that!
Just want to just nail down a really solid reading?
Let's do it!
What kind of cash prize?
We will be awarding $500 for first place and $250 for the runner-up, as well as full or partial travel reimbursement for the first place playwright to Calgary, AB for the workshop.
Why do this competition?
We are a scrappy little company that believes the conversation between young theatre artists is vital in order for fresh, exciting theatre to continue in this country.
Over the past two years we have been able to award $2,700 to young playwrights across the country as well as stage four workshop readings of winning plays at Sage Theatre's IGNITE! Festival.
It is also super important to us that we keep this competition free for all applicants.
Which is why all three years of these awards have been solely funded through house parties and the generous support of individual donors.
Thank you to this year's donors:
Javier Vilalta, Susan Gorrie, Alane Smith, Denise Clarke, Elaine Weryshko, Griffin Cork, Tim Carlson, Shelley Spence & Ian Williamson, Jillian Harris, Frank Zappa, Charles Cochrane, Elinor Holt, Stacey & Brian Medd, Hernan M, Nancy McAlear, Valerie Planche, Brooklyne Alexander, The Right Honourable Baron Von Frontlebottom, Dave Horak and Edmonton Actors Theatre, Mathieu Bourassa, Jane and Steve Glassman, Matthew Oliver van Diepen, Tori Morrison, & Joel Cochrane
To all of you and those who have supported us through one of our parties or events, our sincerest gratitude.
We adore you.
Okay! How do I apply?
Submissions for 2017 are now closed.
